CHANGE OF DIRECTION - explained, start of march

After our initial presentation of 'day at the beach' esme and I met again and decided to go our seperate ways.

This was because Esme realised this idea wasn't what she wanted to get out of CSM Live, so we tried to come up with a new idea but in the end it was agreed that it made more sense to do different things. I think this was the right thing as we have different aims and focuses.

I took a break from thinking about it all as my film took over, however now i am coming back to it and want to really push the idea of entertwining set with costume and using every day objects as the focus point. This is because i have always been interested in re using existing things, and am a collector of found objects on streets as i think there is something beautiful in objects that have a story and have been discarded for a particular reason. It is also quite sad.

I am beginning now to think about just involving one object and really focusing on the idea of play and experimenting - I aim to bring performers together with multiple of one object and just see how everyone interacts with it differently, as if they don't know the function of it.

My chosen object right now is umbrellas because i love the way they transform in multiple ways and their structure is so simple yet effective. I can see them working with the rigs as they are lightweight, and attatching to both performers and other umbrellas could be beautiful to make interesting body scultpures which start as set and tranform to be costume.

I am also interested in playing more with fabrics, and looking how a material alone can create a whole piece as a starting point. I will begin experimenting with both umbrellas and a variety of fabrics to see what happens and what shapes i can create.

I want to push how we see objects and materials and this idea of play rather than a choreographed, traditional set and costume piece.
