04/02. Interview reflection

The PDP interview today showed me that i need to think more about the placing of my greenspaces project.

The idea of creating a performance where people just want to go shopping is unrealistic , so i must think more logically...Perhaps in a tube station or somewhere were people are bored and dont mind interacting with public art?

The interview also highlighted the fact that the body is my canvas and i should promote this more. I will take this into account when thinking about my part 3 proposal.

28/01 Day Plan, 'meeting with myself'

28/01 plan

  • Bring sculpture here and get classmates to interact with it. Think about my audience and how to interact on a more personal level. EG I will try leaving a note down, then contrast to verbal instructions.
  • Print off all outcomes and buy paper, tape
  • Bio hacking
  • The cremaster cycle
  • Print off then do abstract mark making, think about COLOURS
  • Work into watercolour and enlarge
  • Print amy ones big and 3 of katie ones, choose one image of bideo and have on full page, then all 6 .
  • Print the tight sculpture and then collage onto different body parts. Ie print multiple ones and find people images in magazines, then stick on, rotate, draw on, do shape thing from instagram
  • Take off skin hunger 3d thingy and re draw body, then use page behind it.
  • Photocopy and paint onto legs
  • Downscale life drawing
  • Photocopy with plastic
  • Photocopy model wearing stuff
  • Draw directly onto the a2 page
  • Not linear layout. Like a journey. No border and change up layout.

20/01 Space time, initial ideas

Key facts

  • gravity slows time down
  • space is being curved and time is being distorted, all due to gravity
  • space-time is albert einsteins theory of relativity: no point of space can be mesured without time
  • higher up gravity is felt less, and it all changes around equator too

Ideas

  • Costume to represent gravity or look at themes of gravity's effect on us. I could play with materials to look at the idea of weighing down the model, like gravity does to us all. EG feathers vs clay
  • Costume that changes state when worn. Research into this...like melting ice as a necklace
  • look at ideas of perception, play with mirrors and projecting onto mirrors. Even just costumes in a room of mirrors give multiple views on the costume. EG costume with feathers, clay, mesh, all weighed down in different places.  a mirrowed room would show the different perceptions of gravity we all have across the world

12/01, Human bin bag garment

I am interested in creating a garment simply for functional use.

Schiaparelli's bureau drawer suit inspires me as it was created responding to actual chests of drawers, therefore the suit incorporated the idea of drawers as pockets.

Now I am thinking of exploring further the idea of treating humans as we treat greens paces by directly owning them and leaving traces without care.

I am thinking I coukd create a simply bin vest, using patchwork of fabric leftovers and plastics found in bins. It would be 100% recycled and involve pockets all around so that the vest is an actual bin.

A wearable bin, which is a solution to excess litter in greens paces.

13/01 meeting with myself plus week plan

13/01 Notes from class, meeting with myself

Week commencing 10th Feb is assessment week for part 2

Need to print thumbnail images of possible portfolio pages for Wednesday

CHECK EMAILS as Adrian will get in touch about preparing Edinburgh portfolio: Thursday or Friday

Look at how videos are edited and get ideas how to edit mine – go on workflow and find digital artist from re edit project. Find artist and reference on workflow

WEEKS PLAN

Today I have all morning to focus on my project. I need to get videos from Steph, and upload to laptop.

Then I must start researching digital artists and think about how to edit my film and how I will put together my footage. Think about my message

At lunch and after lunch I must go to computer room and read the article for the seminar again to refresh it in my mind.

Tonight I will decide what to do about Edinburgh and begin to select images for thumbnail printing before Wednesday. I must finish artist page in sketchbook and look through all my sketchbooks and take images of them.

Once I have done this I must focus on editing my video for Thursdays crit. Look over feedback from last crit, and think about the artists I have found.

Portfolio is my main focus so ensure I have printed off thumbnail page before I see Adrian.

07/01, meeting with myself

How has your work developed today

Today I went out to Waterlow Park in order to get a feel of the greensspace, how it links to humanity, and think about how I can link camouflage with nature and humans.
I created a video of myself being emerged in a Bush, and I also got footage of general nature.
I am going to project the general footage onto myself in order to merge nature with humanity, to demonstrate our relationship with it via greenspaces.

What problems have you encountered

I couldn't find fairy lights in any local shops.
Also the fact its daylight means I can't film this shoot.
Lastly, I am unsure how to link all the footage I'm creating.

What potential solutions can you explore

Tomorrow I'm going to other shops to find some lights as this shoot is most relevant I think
Once I have filmed this, I will be able to actually make my video and put it all together

How is your research impacting on your ideas and decisions

Without my research, I wouldn't have even thought to use lights nor camouflage whi h is now my actual theme. I am realising how vital research is for my practice

NEXT STEPS
Buy lights
Shoot fairy light scene tomorrow afternoon
Film projection of nature onto my body
Download an app to put all the footage together

18/12, Extending projects

I'm looking back over my previous projects in part 2 and am now thinking about extending them, not only the outcome but experimentation also.

For instance, my projection project I only did onto my back... But perhaps it would be more effective on other body parts? Arms, faces, multiple people, different ages...

I am setting up a projector in my house and am going to ask various aged people to get involved. Therefore I can try out different angles and ways of getting across my message of pushing our boundaries regarding our bodies.

08/12 general reflection

After meeting Oonagh i am thinking how i can analise my ideas in more depth and think more structurally rather than only limiting myself to 2d ideas

i am looking closely at visualising data by soundwaves currently, so i need to think how can i create an architectural design of soundwaves keeping with the body

a 3d pen sounds a good idea because the structure of soundwaves are very intricate and detailed so a 3d pen would fit with this well

but i should be more abstract with my structure ideas. what makes a soundwave a soundwave? the fact it goes thin then thick and isn't symmetrical, is detailed and unique....no soundwave can be copied.

elsa schiaparelli is a fashion designer who interests me at the minute. her influences are mainly from surreal artists but also her interest in things like spriritual philosophies and general ideas like beauty.

taking inspiration from her outrageous ideas like a shoe hat or her 'tear' dress, she is saying 'what is real?'

she is also pushing the boundaries of art and fashion...are her designs clothing fashion designs or art ? perhaps both..?

soundwaves. data. personal data...hair is personal.....soundwaves as hair. a soundwve wig......

i will use my sketchbook now to try visualise my ideas and make my development clear.

images of the weird species i got in nottingham remind me of soundwaves as their structure is also detailed and specific. i could take ideas from surrealism, schiaparella and soundwaves to create a sort of new species as a wig

04/12 Meeting with Oonagh

Feedback and reflecting after meeting Oonagh:

Artists Edward mahoney....look into the boundaries between when art should be on the body and therefore fashion vs just an art piece.
Schaperilla surrealism. Famous artist, around time of coco chanel who influenced fashion world. I coukd get her book out library if it's there.
When does functions change between art and fashion
PERFORMANCE BA I need to look into this! Because my approach isn't that fashion based its more performance based.
Analysis and 3d needed in sketchbook. For instance I need to interrogate sound waves, their shape, what form could they take, what do I think of when I think of them, how could I link it with human body rather than slapping it onto body...
Perhaps I coukd buy 3d pen and make sculpture. Then I need to think about where it should go on body.... I am showing Exposure so perhaps I cut create a sculpture for a specific body part that is never / always exposed. The face is always. The tummy isn't so much. Neither is feet. Inner thighs. Etc. Think before I just put my art onto the body.
EXPERIMENT MORE and go out my comfort zone of only working with 2d. How? Create sculpture work, look more into shape of things and their actual design
PDP BA, but must check over personal statement first.
Experiment and any skis of sound waves

When is art art and when is it fashion?????? THINK AND RESEARCH INTO THIS

28/11 Crit reflection

  • Crit Feedback
My peers Like thought of who owns data, relevant question today, idea of wearing it and onto skin. Good onto fabric, questions do we choose to wear and own data it or is it part of our own body. Thought of choice or forced upon us? The crit had made me think of different ideas and questions related to my topic.

What I need to work on... Confusion of execution.... Need to make process really clear, visual journey but do include text if I need to.

Artists to look at: Mona hattam, Interior exterior, used hair to show identity. I could still make a garment but move it onto hair or face as more personal body part

Perhaps Chuck close? Only links to pixilation though and I have moved on from that now.

(Soundwaves reference, hiderface afextwin... Sound waves... Video on YouTube.)
Rhona Foster uses data on body, more on face, also what other people put on.
Your own data but also what other people put onto yourself. Eg Google creates your own data... Is your data all personal information?

More references : The strand exhibition, transformers is a piece of sound waves. LOOK UP!

in summary:
What I need to do:
Make my sketchbook more clear, a concise journey of development. Do this with diagrams and writing and print offs.
Research Rhona Foster and Mona Hattam, plus Google the 'transformers' piece at the strand.
Start to make my garment.
Think about presentation of it.. I could create a video of it modelled in busy public space? Or photography? Or hang it like a blanket... Use artists from tate Modern as reference.

( Make a piece on a serious matter like sense deprivated from 24/7 then make a piece and turn it into an add video or card... Make even an interactive piece in exhibition)

general reflection 20/11

This is my bin in my flat...Every time I look in it I find unused food, plastic that could be re-used, SO MUCH WASTE

The amount of food I have got out this bin sounds so gross but is is never off or moldy and I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE WASTE SO MUCH

so here is my main inspiration, my surroundings

hopefully I can incorporate food waste into some sort of personal project maybe in part 3? I want to try make fabric material made from things like banana skins and waste in general...If It is possible with bacteria then surely this could work too???

16/11 general reflection: my future direction

After researching various artists recently, i am starting to finally realise what direction i want to go into.

I want to question 'what is fashion' by incorporating multi media and fine art into designs for the body...Specifically inspired by the brand 'Pugment', i am going to link my surroundings and society to art on the body.

Today i went charity shopping and got 3 random fashion items: With these i am going to create a 'no waste' collection inspired by yesterdays open day, and make various hybrid looks. I want to do this because charity shops have always been very personal to me and my family, and i get nearly all my clothes from them now.

I am reflecting on the need of sustainable fashion and the fact that we can all make a small difference by simply buying second hand clothes. My hybrid looks will hopefully give a sense of diversity, and communicate the fact that anyone and everyone can shop in charity shops. They have clothes for everyone.

Biloxi, Mississippi 2005 2005

'question the human conquest of nature at any cost'

looking at power and cost of materials

materialism

hurricane katrina, loss of life in new orleans

Biloxi is exploring the idea of human power, well lack of power really. This also links to the idea of 'human cost' which could be represented by the broken materials to show we are worth nothing. To me, this is a sad and effective photo which can give many conceptual ideas but primarily looks at the power and cost of human life...What are we worth?

He is using photography to get across this theme of destruction and power, which is effective because of the fact it is taken only weeks after Hurricane Katrina. Therefore, there is clear destruction and loss shown in the image as we can see only remains of materials. Everything has been destroyed and the fact there are no humans in the photo suggests all human life has been ruined. We are less powerful than the materials we buy, we are mortal and weak.

I think his approach is successful in showing destruction and loss of life, however it is quite unclear what exactly he wants to show. Maybe this is his aim, in which case it is successful yes.

The work is laid onto aluminium, and has a neat, white bordered finish. This gives a professional approach and makes the photo almost more trustworthy? The placement isn't unusual, and is at eye level on the wall which makes it obvious for the viewer when looking round the room. The fact there are only 2 pieces by the artist in this room and that they are widely spread apart makes both pieces stand out more, adding to the effectiveness on the message of power.

Being Human 03/11

What were the 3 points your group highlighted?
Firstly, class division within society. This is a clear issue today because where and within whom you are born in completely alters your life,  your education, wealth, everything. The fact that such a small percentage, about 1 percent, own almost all our country's wealth proves that there is clear inequality among society. Also, if you happen to be born with wealth, you automatically have more opportunities and a better quality of life which even means you will live longer..this can't be fair?
Secondly we chose sexuality as a general topic. So much comes into this and for me I want to specify sexuak expression... In certain countries it is law, or culture even, women aren't allowed to even enjoy sex and they have operations to remove parts of their body like the clitoris... The same goes for some men in other countries but usually it is an issue for women only. This is horrible, even if it culture, it is still an issue.
Obviously there is the other side of sexualitt as in freedom to express your own sexualitt even if it's not what society expects of you.
Lastly we chose human emotion, linking specifically to human instinct. I think this is key for us to note because it is our instinct and ego that causes all our actions, which usually link to the idea of power. Every issue we highlighted was possible to link to humanity's want for more power, greed, selfishness... It was alarming. Moreover, our other emotions are what makes us different and unique to all other animals and these allow us to create societies and cities.

What other points made by your group interested you and why?
Another point that was interesting was how our society works ie capitalism, communism and our ruling. This also links to issues like materialism and commercialism because all these connect and show our need to create hierarchies.
One other group talked about our weakness regarding our ego... It seems we want to stand out yet also fit in, which results in creations of things more powerful than ourselves to make up for the fact we are so weak. Technology! It is beginning to control us, whether it be simply data bases at birth, cameras on streets, saved messages automatically... It is scary and we should address it.

What issues/sub themes are going to explore?

So far, we have narrowed it down to a few but we will firstly try out the issue of our lack of intimacy. At first I thought of this connected to technology but when we looked into it more we realised there is a general lack of intimacy in society today. This means both physical contact and mental connections so we will explore this further.

What resources will you need?

We aim to create our outcome as a video which will involve sound, performance, photography and possibly online footage too. So we need a camera or phone for videos and we need to go out into societt and video there.

We will use materials to create a barrier for the camera, as this will give the viewer a lack of intimacy too. Eg bubble wrap, glasses, netting, mesh... Anything really

How can you get them in time?

We will begin filming tomorrow and the materials are easy to find at home.

Re-edit reflection day 1, 11/11

What do you think constitutes a found footage artwork?

I believe anything can be called artwork so long as it has an effect on the viewer. This could be anything from an intense reaction, a provocation of a memory, literally anything…I sometimes find it hard to count certain conceptual artwork to be actual ‘act’ just because I have grown up to believe art has to show talent, but I am starting to realise it simply must convey something for the viewer. I wonder how art will be constituted in the future as it seems to be becoming more and more conceptual? Perhaps digital art will take over and footage will need intense editing to be art, but I don’t believe that is right.

How can you subvert or extend the original meaning of the found footage?

Currently, I am thinking of involving the human body into my found footage to convey a new meaning. Projection for example onto a literal body will show the footage in a new light…But in general, editing is so advanced now that you can change any footage’s meaning through things like changing the speed, adding sound, reversing it, changing the opacity, almost anything…Editing is so powerful now and I want to push the boundaries of using footage alongside actual human beings to show life isn’t just digital!

How have you altered your previous idea of what could be art?

The more videos and conceptual footage I am shown, the more ideas I think of and my belief towards ‘what is art’ does change…Like today, ‘telephone’ keeps replaying in my head which shows it has impacted my thoughts and therefore I believe this to be art. Anything that impacts the viewer is art, with or without editing.

What are you going to do for tomorrow?

There is quite a lot to do. I need to read the essay again as I only remember certain aspects of it, and I must sort out interesting footage for my 2 minute video. But first, what issue should I reflect on? I want to make it about humans, and perhaps involve the human body somehow. I should look into artists who have used projection of video, and also decide my issue I am interested most in. Currently, I am thinking perhaps something about the modelling industry and how fashion models are always a certain shape which don’t represent the majority of the population. This could even be a cause to weight issues as I know it is with models we see on social media. But then today’s videos on how women are depicted through media is another interesting issue…I could make footage and literally take a video of it projected onto a female? Or is that too cliché….I should push my ideas further through a mind map.

06/02, Part 3 project ideas

The one thing i know that i want to do in part 3 is use the body as my main basis, and starting point.

Whilst looking over my portfolio and work in part 2, I realise that choice of materials and textiles matters a lot for my work. For instance, using tights for their feel and appearance, mixed with plastic, then human hair, then actual nature...All of these costumes had a common theme of carefully selected material rather than shape.

A key issue for me is food and plastic waste, and i want to try experimenting with these in order to perhaps make a new fabric which i will create for the body; a sort of costume? This is inspired by 'the next black' documentary.

I have just been shown that if i put crisp packets in the microwaves, they shrink and create a delicate fabric..This is a possible starting point.

Adapting food waste, heating wasted materials...Then using the body. This could be interesting.

However, another key theme has been my relationship with my audience. For instance, using performance and interaction have been crucial for my work. So i should think how this could come into my previous idea.

30/01, Reflecting and thinking about crit layout

Inspired by Franz Kline, I am thinking about positioning my sculpture in an obvious place which is designed to be picked up and worn on the body.

I will try simply installing it on a table, and leaving a note. This is simple and clear. I will record how this goes, and then adapt accordingly.

If i had more time and wasn't so focused on my portfolio then i would try out another model which was made of a different material. I like the idea of a sensual scultpure that the wearer feels different wearing. Perhaps even just play around with different weighted scultpures and make it a series.

27/01 week plan

PLAN FOR WEEK

  • Decide what paper to do and buy paper here at archway along with tape
  • Print off outcomes for fine art folio
  • Begin fan idea for space time
  • Experiment with materials, stitch ideas into fabric which goes onto figure drawing
  • Drape tights with rocks and cotton wool in for sculpture
  • Get pictures of sculpture on martha
  • Find rocks and little heavy materials
  • Make abstract page from my project
  • go get stills from body boundaries video

POST CRIT PLAN:

  • Email jo
  • Finish Edinburgh folio using advice from crit
  • Print off all my outcomes and ensure all my pages are scanned.
  • Buy paper and tape then start playing around with assembling it all.
  • Outcome- experiment work and ideas from sketchbook -mood boards with context and materials
  • Find my drawings and scan, also think how to do more for each project

16/01 Crit Feedback

Don't show the bin
Edit sound and remove thank uious
See more of things don't go well. Get  people to use ur own rubbish
Show difficultly of putting rubbish
Record street sound and use that
I shoukd do it myself
Don't show bin
Get someone more professional to record
Get rid of time lapse of me dressing her up

NEXT STEPS BEFORE APRIL

Mix footage from first time around, ie videos of close up anisha in kitchen with flash on, with footage this time around

Try removing time lapse as it doesn't add to it.

Experiment with editing out the bin.

Think about doing it again but using myself and someone else record, where people actively throw their own rubbish on me. Like a human bin.

Record sounds of just street life and use this for my audio.

Planning and thought process, 07/01

Plan and thinking for today

Go to park and get some footage whilst focusing on camouflage and humanity's relationship with nature in a greensspace.
Bury different body parts in nature
Collect leaves and actually cover a friend with them, then video them moving in the leaves and eventually emerging
Also, buy fairy lights in archway and plan how and when I will get footage for this. Tonight possibly? Perhaps tomorrow early evening as its dark then and not dangerous
Maybe I need batteries too if they don't come with them. Aa size

06/01 my thought process in class

LUX project, my thought process planning ideas.

Greenspaces

“Parks and green spaces have power.
They can change how people live in a place,
interact in a place and choose to stay in a place.”

Leaves, body camouflage…Rebecca horn

Emerging out of leaves

Blinkers made from leaves, twigs…

Fairy light lit figure dancing in park at night….ARTist

Perhaps fairy lit figure emerges from leaves

Just general dancing lit figure in a greenspace perhaps

I want to link my interest of performance with the 90 second video, so I am thinking how to do this whilst giving my message about green spaces

I am intrigued by idea of creating costume using fairy lights in order to light the human figure up

Therefore I am thinking I could incorporate this with an actual greenspace like a park

I could film myself dancing in a costume of lights, at night in a park, and see how this goes

Ideally multiple lit up dancers would look better as this gives my message of how a green space brings life to society and links humans together in a way technology and anything else cannot.

In the crit, I liked the video of the process of flowers growing and plants developing. It had an unusual purity to it, a new angle and was addictive to watch]

Petr’s art makes me think…’at one with nature’

That is the aim of a greenspace surely, to allow humans to be at one with nature

Therefore I could conceal a human body into a greenspace

I could make a grass costume?

A leaf costume too???

And make a video of these

I am interested in bathing in nature, but I don’t have a bath.

I could create a ‘shower of nature’

If I collect things like leaves, soil, grass, plants…I could literally shower these onto myself or a friend in a performance way. Then this is a performance video connecting nature to mankind on a personal level.

I like the idea of painting with a body part as a performance

Cindy sherman’s piece of vomit and rubbish on a destroyed landscape make my think of what a greenspace counts as. Perhaps they don’t exist for everyone and this is what I should reflect on?

I could create a video incorporating dead greenspaces, along with a performance to show destruction. Smearing is simple yet effective. I could smear soil and leaves and grass all over someones/ my body. Or simply lay out these materials and have myself roll around in them?

So I need to go collect nature materials and start thinking about what other footage I could put on my video. Eg nature footage

To do list:

  • Collect nature materials. Plants, soil, leaves, grass. Need lots to do both costume and shower
  • Ask around for fairy lights and see if I can film that tonight or tomorrow night

Guy cramer – made quontom self. Camouflage work for body. Link to nature.

Datafied crit 5/12

After experimenting with presentation of my soundwave garment, i am beginning to realise it isn't ovbious enough to be visual data.

conceptual is good yes but my audience won't have a clue why it is sat there on the floor???

Now i am thinking how to develop it and make it more obvious but still adbstract.

I have found an embriodery artist who embroidered soundwaves and the outcome looks detailed and unique.

Instead of literally copying this, i could get the idea of embroidery and use this in the future

I want to show information, data, so i need detail as all data is unique.

i could link it to hair as i was looking at idea of weaving hair into my garment

perhaps i could embroider hair? not sure if this works.

I will start experimenting now with hair from brushes but i may cut my own as it will work better

EVIL CINEMA FEEDBACK: List of what I need to work on

Show evidence through video, eg clips onto digital outcomes, and show on sketchbook how I have developed through video by screenshots

Don’t use links, just make it smaller ie ask technician

Keep using youtube and put links on workflow WITH screenshots!!!

Make it clearer on order. Spend evening sorting this. Asap!

Record feedback and then put under it my response, highlight this. What will I change and ignore and take with me later on. This will help my further development.

If artist is in contextual practice then must be in research to

More on picking apart ideas and fully diving into feedback. Need more detail

Thoughts after class discussions, highlighted. Need my opinion and why is it in terms of digitality.

Set my own questions to promote self-reliance

Expand ideas and new things in contextual practice

Show impact of research and then follow up with it. How is it challenging my own practice/thinking?

Make my ideas more obvious

Revisit workflow when I am chilling, read through my things and reflect otherwise I will forhet. Highlight them.

Put images in there to connect what I do with what I plan to do

Make sure text isn’t copied. If quoted then make obvious

Jennifer j.williams-baffoe@csm.arts.ac.uk for sorting out weird research page!!!!!!!!

Experiment with presentation and document then put on worlfow and in sketchbook

Scan in sketchbook pages for digital portfolio to show process.

Change colour for any quotes

Re-read regularly – prevents forgetting anything useful

If I put qs how do I answer them or reflect on them? Show this as it will help my development

If I reflect on things make it clear where and what, and how it has changed my practice

26/11 datafied reflection and plan

  • Need to think about where I will locate my weave. Is it suspended, how? The mechanism of suspension should be part of work and not hidden so don’t use fishing wire. Perhaps suspend it using cables? Eval..
  • Expose my weave in public space to show idea of lack of privacy and extreme exposition of personal data on social media. Eg oxford circus
  • ‘’world brain’’ data video
  • Suzanne lacey, performance piece of middle aged. Made image into weaving
  • After talking in pairs, I should try suspending my weave with cables for exhibition but when wearing it, weave cables into the actual weave along with personal items eg hair, knickers, keys...

Data center trip, Virtus, 25/11

  • Like an ecosystem
  • Very corporate, business like…gave us branded things, trying to promote themselves…quite distant
  • Cleanse themselves of the data themselves. Emphasis on protection with boardering data and securing it with generates. They b=provide the infrastructure and ecosystem but wahs hands of how it is transmitted.
  • In denial? ‘’future isn’t automated’’ but already we see automatic machinery, less people, very bare
  • Primary research is research you generate personaly…knowledge gained from research carried out by yourself firest hand. Eg focus groups, surveys, interviews, questionnaires, site visits
  • Specific visual language ie strict presentation, dress smart, distant and formal look
  • Data is extremely guarded. In a secure location not central, in a sort of prison that is caged in. quite rural
  • Sounds of harddrives and sticky pads, sensual visit, echo from vast space
  • Almost scary? Amount of data we walked on. Made me feel slightly uneasy at the sense of power data has over us all.
  • Humans seem powerless compared to data centers. They store all our transactions and information...without us even knowing?
  • Perhaps use cables with my work. Trail cables, weave in cables?

Datafied reflection 18/11

What kind of data is collected every day and to what aim?
All our actions digitally are collected which means what we buy online, what we search, even what we like or comment on social media... All of it. Even in real life, data recordings from cctv are recorded and I didn't realise the extent: in average in London one goes on 300 cameras daily. This is scary as our lives are recorded, all our actions and choices.
The aim is for big companies to know exactly who to target with ads but also how to develop their brands. People like amazon or other big companies who want to make as much profit ad possible.
What are the ethical and legal issues of privacy?
The ethical issues are is it right to own data on someone else? Who even owns the data in the first place... And who shoukd be able to see other peoples.
Legally, is complicated and debatable... Should companies have lawful rights to control our ads digitally and be able to see exactly what we search or look at?
What impact does it have on society, identity?
It makes society all come together as one body. This isn't positive however as it means that as each individual is just part of a big controlled plan for companies to make money. It makes us all seem irrelevant and powerless but also under false pretences... As if anyone reads terms and conditions and thinks before they accept cookies on most websites? This is how data is generated partly and no one even realises... We are pawn of a big plan.
What images come to mind when you think of data?
I think digital footprint, and black and white images from website footage thingy
But after the presentation I now think of the idea of a woven piece which has colours to represent emotuon and moods... I want to look more into this woven idea.
What images can I collect this evening so that I can start to develop ideas tomorrow?
I need to find an app to pixilate images.
Then I need to research more into the woven artist and look at possible materaisk to use.
Perhaps use pastels and start making drawings of my woven portraits onto the body as a wearable piece... Imagine wearing your own data, the power is reversed yet it isn't as it is completely public. It plays with ideas of privacy vs public and also dwells into the focus of how data is visually shown.

Contextual Practice 13/11

What was my main concern
After constant watching my flat mates throw decent food away which isn't even out of date, food waste has been a big concern of mine. Every week I actually check the bins and often take fully packaged, unopened food out of it for myself... I have tried making a point but there is a huge language barrier and it is hard to say things without being rude. Therefore I wanted to create something reflecting on the idea of wasting good food, or just waste in general.

What was my action
I decided to involve an actual bin as my object. By having the option to apply an instruction or not, I began to question what sort of intruction I hsojkd put... Should I write 'throw something away'? Or make it more subtle? I ended up trying a few ideas, and my favourite was 'pick something up' because it is a juxtaposition to the point of bins in the first place. Also it clearly shows my issue of throwing unjust items away. However I found it interesting when someone else wrote 'ignore this ' next to my note because this sort of anonymous debate is a daily aspect of our lives, especially online.
After my bin idea I wanted to involve my body as my way of interaction... I chose my idea to be 'draw on me' because I knew it would be clearly interactive and intimate. I like the idea of my art being personal with my audience so performance interests me greatly.

Can I improve my work after seeing others
The idea of being controversial was interesting as we will only evolve as a society if we all debate our opinions openly.

How Could I do this.
I saw someone tape up the bin which I wish I had thought of!
Perhaps I could have extended my idea of drawing on the body to be controversial. Or even linked the body work to the bin idea?
I could have instructed people to put something from the bin onto my body, as this incorporates the intimate level and the issue of wasting goods.

What have I learnt today
It has made me think a lot about the sort of work I want to produce... I like the idea of interaction rather than just reflecting on issues. I also prefer this sort of thinking when it comes to conceptual art, as I want to give clear messages and not really minimalistic art simply because I don't feel as connected to this sort of thing.
I'm thinking a lot about fashion communication because it links to my enjoyment of working on the body, and it also links to my interest in reflecting on society and using photography. I would also incorporate fine art aspects like performance as a way of connecting more to my audience.
Also I have learnt a lot about the importance of performance. I didn't realise it counts if you ask someone else to perform and you record, and I find the idea of using my audience as the performers interesting too. Even if it's not optional... I'm intrigued to try more interactive art out, while incorporating art on the body.

'The end of the twentieth century', Joseph Beuys

basalt stone structure

healing process

encouraging an 'ecological awakening'

symbolism.

This sculpture is unique as it works alongside an environmental project of planting trees. Therefore, Joseph is commenting on our lack of awareness for our environment...He is saying that if we do not take action now and change the way we abuse our surroundings then soon we won't have any surroundings left.

He is using symbolism as a key part of this sculpture, via the craped circle onto each stone. This represents the idea of healing and new life, since he using the fact plants find new life in cracks of walls. This structure is made from strong heavy basalt in order to give off his clear powerful statement. It makes me realise, i need to start thinking more about what messages different materials give off.

I feel his approach is reasonably effective however i often find sculptures less hard to understand, and although the idea of symbolism is interesting, it isn't actually helping the environment. Perhaps an interactive sculpture piece would be more effective, in my opinion. If i were to extend his sculpture i would think about images of the rocks on human bodies, because this would clearly show the power and strength and automatically link to our power on our environment...I would make it into a body piece.

The stones are arranged on the floor in no specific array, with some on their sides, some touching, all random. This is a nice refreshing change to the automatic ordered array of gallery things, so i like it as it stands out. I need to think more about where i would place my work, as this has a clear impact on the audience.

Kara Walker, Fons Americanus

Race, sexuality and violence

Questions how we remember history in our public monuments

In this sculpture, Kara is looking into the human race in terms of our hierarchy and social interactions. She does this by creating a sort of narrative that involves various continents and even the black slave trade. Essentially, i think Zara is showing the sad reality of our history, and the unjust treatment during the slave trade. She is diving into issues like human instinct, human power and greed, along with societal issues of history.

She uses water in order to bring her piece to life which is very effective. The fact the female statue at the top is squirting water from a sort of fountain creates an automatic hierarchy as this water is drowning the slaves at the bottom, who are trying to escape from sharks. The use of height is effective as it gives an automatic hierarchy, and the fact Zara has used stone for this makes it link to power as this material is strong and heavy....She is relating to levels of power.

At first, i didn't agree this piece was successful because i didn't approach it in an open minded way. Usually, i tend t dismiss public monuments as they are often telling fake truths and are picked by those in power giving a biased view. However, after reading into this piece and looking over pictures again and again, i think it is very effective. The fact the statue is creating such destruction at the bottom for the slaves makes the piece provocative and eye opening. Furthermore, it has left me realising that yes, public monuments don't usually tell the truth and that makes this piece an art piece instead of a public piece...This is important - looking into what pieces are public and why. Perhaps censorship exists everywhere?

The piece is bang in the middle of the bottom floor and cannot not be seen..it is huge. This makes it a clear statement, and automatically powerful in itself which links to its message of levels of power.

Being human 04/11

How have you refined your ideas to something workable?

We have narrowed down ideas because we want to give a clear message and not go off track, therefore things like 'drawing a map on the body' have been removed. Our method was simply come up with all our ideas and then refine them and make a story board for a film. We have still left certain things uncertain so we must experiment on these...like, what song in the background? It must relate to human beings and our world..perhaps 'life on mars?' to connect with our idea of lacking human touch, a sort of alienation?

Can you complete the work for thursday?

As long as we complete the video fully before thursday including sound, then on thursday morning we must project the video onto human skin...perhaps a tummy or back? this won't involve anyones face, simply skin as the canvas. Therefore there is a clear link with the issue of 'skin hunger'.

How are you going to manage your time between now and Thursday?

Tonight i will bring together and edit the videos taken so far, and put these together in a film. Then, tomorrow as a pair me and Martha will decide how to put her 30 second video together with mine and we can then add soundtrack over it all.

How has your discussion and or research impacted on your ideas, and making?

During our discussion it became apparent that the idea of 'skin hunger' was the most interesting part of our theme of lack of intimacy. Therefore, it makes more sense to create clips reflecting on human skin, so we are now filming hands pressed against windows, touching animals, more sensual things than before. Our research was vital as it introduced us to the disease of skin hunger which is massive in america today, mainly due to advances in technology.

space time group crit, 30/01

Reactions from my peers:

i like the fact it is abstract and open to interpretation as you can wear it how you want

looks like its own living organism as it works alone or on body

it is deliberately 3d for its own sake and has no specificity on where it is on the body.

good that it makes person interact

is it based on some shape?

Perhaps think about another location

My reflection:

I am thinking i could take the idea of different location, and try performing it in public whilst making a sort of human sculpture.

I like the idea of it being its own organism but also working with the body. Therefore is is more open. I should take this into part 3, the idea of my art having 2 uses.

06/01, meeting with myself

How has your work developed today

After reading and researching, I'm coming up with new initial ideas for my video/performance work. I'm thinking of using the human body combined with nature to show our relationship with greens paces and how we are at one with nature within them. I want it to be positive.
Therefore I'm wanting to extent my video of using fairy light, and I want to collect nature materials in order to create a natural costume

What problems have you encountered

Lighting... I can only film my fairy light costume when it's dark so I must arrange my time well.
Yet I can only film the nature costume in light..
So I need to make various park visits for this to work
Also my video wound be more effective with more lights so I must buy more ASAP

What potential solution can u explore

Amazon or ebay for lights if I can't find some locally
Planning time better and arranging with my friend anisha when she is free too to film/model
Pick a day where plants are not wet ie check weather reports!!!!!

How is your research impacting on ur ideas and decisions

It is creating new ideas and basis for my developments.
Therefore I can try out various things and not worry about my final outcome yet. This is something I'm trying to work on rather than only thinking about the outcome the whole time

  • Next steps--
Look more into camouflage and merging nature with humans, this is an interesting topic that I coukd extend
Upload everything to workflow and keep my ideas organised
Go out today and search for fairy lights in archway
Collect materials for a shoot tomorrow in daylight. Eg leaves and grass and plants

22/12, Extending projects part 2

Now I am focusing on my first project which linked to skin hunger. Although I like my sculptural body outcome, I shoukd have dived more into experiments with the materials.

I am currently interested by playing with plastic in my designs as perhaps the future of costume and fashion will use plastic to its advantage, and not disregard it as waste.

I am going to try heat up various types of plastic which I find about to be binned, like bottles or packaging.

Then I will see what I can do, merging it with tights and making a skin costume.

10/12 Progress Tutorial

I have been advised to focus more on extending and developing my projects over the holiday, and making all this journey clear in my sketchbook.

For instance, i could experiment with tights more and create a sort of human second skin, which doesn't involve paper.

Simply wrap the body in tights but first do body parts and photograph this; make sure to focus on the setting. eg on grass, and think of why. or in middle of street and why

if its on grass then it makes the costume a sensual costume which links exaclty to lucy mcraes compression cradle, and the idea of intimacy

i need to also show clearly steps in my projects

for instance in the projection re-edit video, i need to show why i decided on the back. therefore i must experiment with body parts over the holiday, along with how close up or far away the projection is

look into real depth with an artist and understand their thought process as it may help me to find exactly what area i want to go into

Taking from this:

I now have a list of artists to look at which will develop my ideas and practice.

I also need to look into these issues:

Digital printing, camouflage for warfare used in the military, Dazzle camouflage and digital human recognition.

I need to research the magazine 032C who use digital patterns

Lastlly I need to put in the changes made for my personal statement and then draft a fiery intro and conclusion, and extend the 4D paragraph.

How does fine art enable my work to be positively different to the other fashion students? What does fine art give me that they don't have?

It gives me freedom to combine new media like design with performance , increases my cultural knowledge on the digital world, develops my critical skills in group crits.

Write this out and make it fiery so it catches their attention!

  • Helps to extend research and further understand the new opinion. References can help you
  • Crucial for interviews to show depth of knowledge, extend vocab, and backing up your work.
  • Idea of pills to make you not sleep – removing human aspects but why? Fear and negative aspects of humans actually help our lives and make us different to robots
  • Removing sleep is type of torture
  • 20% of us check phone in night, constantly generating data and addicted to screen
  • Before industrial revolution, sleep patterns were so different… people slept for a few hours then were awake for a few hours then slept again. All depended on lights
  • Idea/obsession with keeping humans awake constantly has been around for years and years. Especially since industrial revolution since gadgets became invented like lights
  • Technology affects all human aspects of our lives; our hands are evolving as we hold phones so much, our sleep patterns are affected since we constantly go on phones before sleep and within night…
  • Surveillance prison, where prisoners constantly think they are being watched. Circular prison. Single tower in middle and all cells go around it.
  • Prisoners never knew when they were watched so they became compliance. Links to LONDON as we are so observered daily. Losing humanity. Now, Beijing has most cctv cameras and is more surveyed. Educational centres (watch documentary)
  • Neo-liberalism – main reason mutlimass companies have so much power over individuals as they can move around different countries. Neo-liberalism believes in privatisation of state things. They believe the financial market will fluxuate but over 10 or 20 years it will balance out which is better for society….but does this make us pay more for little things like public transport? And affect us negatively?

datafied day 6 reflection, 26/11

after discussing my weave idea with david, he has helped me see that i could easily convey my message in a much faster and effective way instead of a big weave involving small material strands.

there are artists such as Emily Lozerwitz who used embroidery to visualise data- she created one on soundwaves which makes me think of actually recording personal data conversation and then cutting out fabric in shape of the soundwaves from this convo...This would be faster and more conceptual, more conceptual.

soundwaves.jpeg

I will research her work further and expand on my idea.

Also, i need to thoroughly think: how can i translate the idea of 'personal data' into something visual? I could look into symbolism perhaps, or just different angles of how people see/understand things. for instance, mors code is only understood to some people. i could look into this and what other things are only relevent to some.

For thursday:

  • research more into Emily Lozerwitz
  • Extend my idea of creating a ditial series: a collection of wearable items that represent personal data. eg sound waves, mors code...what else? and how do i visualise mors code? paint onto fabric?
  • Go buy plain fabric...and look into how i could print ONTO fabric. Where? ---Dalston fabric shop.
  • Research the other artists david showed me: hussein chalayan for instance who involves lots of conceptual work into his designs...also a graduate from csm fashion!

update: FINGERPRINT! will be easy to paint one onto fabric or even try get it printed if its cheap. a fingerprint is the most personal aspect of anyone...and antony gormley's chalk fingerprint made me think of this. so i will research his chalk piece further and see if i can develop this idea

planning datafied, 16/11

I want to focus on the idea of privacy, well lack of it, caused by digital advances.

I also know that i want to work with conceptual fine art aspects along with creating a piece for the body...

Before, i was thinking i could make some kind of bubble to be worn in public spaces, as this would make the piece some sort of performance piece and involve the audience. The bubble would link to personal space and privacy, as it would be see through.

But, what materials should i make it? I'm unsure how realistic my idea is. I am going to keep researching artists and see if i can come up with anything which makes more sense.

Perhaps i could make a see through bag or fashion item..but this is less conceptual so appeals less to me.

a head bubble? perhaps easier

but less interactive with public...

I am going to put forward all this thinking on monday to David. Need to specify my intention of designing a fine art piece on the body as a conceptual fashion item, and then perhaps using our new adobe premiere skills, making a video of it being performed in public.

Maybe i could involve the idea of a 'digital footprint'

Scan everyones fingers and make a sort of print that i use to make a garment. I could project a scanned one onto a body but i have already used projection so i want to physically make something now.

I could use scraps of materials to actually sew on a digital footprint onto plain material. Then, make this wearable on the body.

Crit and reflection 07/11

The range of peoples outcomes showed me the extent of freedom we have in this pathway, which i like. For instance, there were scultpures, paintings, videos, installations, anything really...

What i have realised this week is that i miss physcially making something, and also i miss working on the body. I enjoyed the collaboration with Martha, but next time i will aim  to get away from only a digital outcome and involve design onto the human body.

Also, i know i need to improve my video skills and do want to know how to use adobe properly which we will do next week.

The pieces that have stood out to me were on social issues, and i want to look more into how women are depicted through media as this is an issue i didn't think about much before this week.

Ellen Gallagher, DeLuxe 2004-5

advertisements promoting 'white' beauty

questioning the reinvention promised by these cosmetic products

Ellen is giving a message about the way human beings are obsessed by products and appearance, and is effectively commenting on our vanity and materialistic characteristics. I feel confused when i see these altered images because they are removing the original aim of the adverts and their new message is very extra, very unique. To me, Ellen is commenting on our society as a whole being superficial and obsessed by what we look like.

I chose this work as a wide variety of materials and techniques are used, so this piece has an extra dimension to it. For example, collage is very common in these imgages, but Ellen has also used digital printing and technology along with paint and 3D materials to create individual pieces that are all unique but go as a set well. This extreme use of materials add to the idea of exaggeration, which could link to our society since we don't need these products and are rather obsessive creatures when it comes to beauty.

To me, I am still slightly unsure of the exact message Ellen wants to get across...Is it about racism? Materialism? Perhaps her aim is to create questioning art and it is up to the viewer to decide what it is about. Success of a piece utterly depends on the artists' aim.

The work consists of 60 small collage images, arranged together in a neat rectangle which takes up a whole wall of the gallery room. Therefore, the piece as a whole stands out as it is unique in the fact it is made of many different smaller pieces...The fact each piece is utterly different is effective and it was no surprise that there was always viewers stood at this piece today.

Tate visit general reflection 06/11

I am beginning to realise that i miss working on the human body, and with actual techniques like painting or making...Although i am fascinated by the issues which we look at in 4D as this is why i chose it, i want to expand my outcomes so that they are working with the human body in some sort of way.

This has been my thoughts all week but i am finally realising exactly what they mean for the future. So how do i solve it...Keep going with 4D as it is very interesting and will give me unusual digital skills, but expand my work to create outcomes on the body, perhaps including painting also.

I am increasingly interested by doing fashion. This is because it has been the pathway i have always shut off in my mind simply because i disagree with many aspects of the fashion industry...but surely this is a vital reason to do it? I want to impact society and it seems to me this industry is the most influential and needs the biggest advances.

Today at the exhibition, the sculpture work stood out to me which i was surprised by. This is because i kept imagining how i could make it into a garment of some sort, to work with the human body...this excites me so i will try out drawings tonight based on what i saw.

Contextual Practice, Tate modern visit 6.11.19

Painting and mass media - Rokni Haerizadeh

Altered news images

Election protests

These works intrigued me because they are a clear response to society. Rokni is commenting on the violence of human beings, and comparing us to animals and hybrid creatures in order to demonstrate how mad and inhumane we can easily become...It is a powerful and relatable message because we all have an instinctive side to us and it is usually shown in things like protests or violence.

Rokni is mixing media by painting onto photographs directly from the news, of election protests. This is effective because it brings the viewers attention to the paint, which is in bold colours for further emphasis. Rokni has painted animals and creatures over human faces which deludes the viewer, and comes across as almost frightening and the human face is our main identity. I like how Rokni is changing what is already there, he is adapting something in order to create successful art.

To me, this approach is very successful as it is clear, simply, and provocative. The mixed media gives a unique aspect, along with the unrecognizable figures which make the piece more relatable as there is no personal identities revealed. The bold colours and futuristic creatures give another unique aspect that draws the viewers attention.

This work is similar to that of Ellen's in the arrangement as there are a collection of mixed media pieces all arranged neatly on a big wall. Therefore, they are exposed and catch our eye easily.
